First five minutes
Most of the damage is done before anybody arrives. These three buy you time.
Clockwise on the stopcock until it stops moving. Kitchen cupboard in most houses; cellar head or under the stairs in the older stone terraces. If it feels stiff, stop — snapping it is worse than the leak.
Look at the pipe feeding whatever is leaking. Most have a small valve with a screwdriver slot in it. A quarter turn kills that appliance and leaves you with water everywhere else in the house.
Whatever is directly below the leak is next. Move it, catch what you can, and if the water is tracking towards a downlight or the fuse board, kill that circuit while you wait.

Depends where you are and what we’re on. Town is one thing, the top of the Holme Valley in bad weather is another and we’ll say so. What we won’t do is promise twenty minutes and turn up in three hours.
Yes. Not a message service, not an overflow line in another county. Somebody who can talk you through what to do while we’re travelling.
Kitchen sink cupboard first, then downstairs cupboards, a cellar head if the house has one, or a small metal cover in the path outside. If it won’t turn, don’t force it — old brass snaps and that makes everything considerably worse.
Often. Sinks, toilets and radiators usually have their own isolation valve on the feed pipe — a small screw slot you turn a quarter turn with a flat screwdriver. If one appliance is leaking, that alone may hold it until we get there.
Don’t touch anything wet near a socket, downlight or the consumer unit. If you can reach the board safely, switch that circuit off. Then ring and tell us, so we know what we’re walking into.
You’ll be told the price before work starts, whatever the hour. Nobody gets handed a made-up figure at four in the morning.
